Dr.'s Notes: 5 Steps to Stress-Free Summer Skin!
Even though this summer may be very different from what you’re used to, keep reading for my tips to keeping your skin sun ready!
When we see those first signs of summer, typically, we're preparing for much needed R&R and stocking up on sunscreen essentials (more on these coming). The skin is more exposed as temperatures rise, but as this year's summer is much more uncertain, we are all battling an added skin enemy: stress.
As a naturopathic doctor with a focus in holistic skincare, I understand how the skin can be unbalanced during these times, and what we can do to prioritize its health. I also highlights the telltale signs of stress such as redness, dullness, deep lines, dryness, breakouts, and dark under-eye circles and how to adjust your skincare routine for the summer heat.
A Gentle Cleanse
Cleansing is a focus of mine year round, but especially during these times, I suggests a non-stripping product that keeps the skin balanced. Whether you prefer a gel or milk cleanser, it's important to find one that's free of harmful ingredients that can make stressed skin extra dry or red. I opt for formulas like the that can multitask by removing makeup or impurities while also soothing and balancing the skin.
Add Hydration
Beyond encouraging restful sleep and limiting caffeine intake to reduce the signs of stress, adding moisture back into the skin is also a helpful way to remedy concerns. Keep it light as it gets warmer by using your hyaluronic acid in a lightweight serum or gel. Also aim for oil free products! My favourite hydration boosters:
Clarify with Serums
When the skin is under stress, it cannot function normally which leads to irritation and often breakouts. These flareups can often be due to oil congestion, so I recommends a targeted nutrient-rich serum, to prevent build up on the skin. Must have serums:
Avoid Harsh Ingredients
Scrubs or alcohol-based ingredients are a no-no for stressed skin no matter the season. Stress is a trigger to the sensitivity of the skin, so scratching the surface with scrubs will lead to more redness or dryness. Also avoid toners that can contain too much alcohol or astringent-like ingredients as these can be too harsh.
Shield with SPF & Antioxidants
Whether heading out into the sun or staying indoors, products you can count on contain components like superfoods, adaptogens, and UV filters. Antioxidants protect from harmful free radicals and external factors. Skincare products that have them are beneficial both when under stress and when enjoying warm weather. And, as always, applying your sunscreen is an essential last step.
